The news about Facebook shutting down on March 15 was not a hoax as some publications have reported. It came from the fake news website Weekly World News (WWN), which made the bogus announcement over the weekend. WWN, known for "(covering) events that seem to occur in a parallel universe," even posted fictitious quotes from Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg: "The stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness... I don't care about the money... I just want my old life back."
Mashable.com confirmed that the report was false. Facebook Director of Corporate Communications Larry Yu said, "Please help us put an end to this silliness... We didn't get the memo about shutting down and there's lots to do, so we'll just keep cranking away like always." Posted on Facebook's official fan page: "We aren't going anywhere; we're just getting started."
WWN, which started out in 1979 as a tabloid, clearly states on its website: "The reader should suspend disbelief for the sake of enjoyment." Its latest headlines include "Alien Spaceships to Attack Earth in 2011," "George Clooney to Run for President" and "Michelle Obama Pregnant!"
